• Open the States

Are you a pawn of a right-wing conspiracy? The New York Times thinks you are

We knew this was going to happen, and here we are.

The mainstream media has cast the spontaneous protest movement against heavy-handed COVID-19 lockdowns as nothing more than a conspiracy among right-wing megadonors.

We don't care about journalists who attack OpentheStates.com, but we do take issue with what they're implying about the American grassroots. Apparently, Americans in every state from coast to coast are nothing more than pawns in a fake movement.

Here are a few excerpts:

  • From the New York Times: "From the available polling on these issues and the public statements of many organizers, there is reason to believe that this backlash is more about ideology than about fears of the restrictions’ economic impact."

  • From The Intercept: "The Convention of States is currently driving a sham 'spontaneous citizen movement,' modeled on the fake grassroots Tea Party movement Koch also funded, to demand that government officials ignore public health and 'Open the States.'"

  • From Common Dreams: "Since the 'spontaneous' anti-lockdown protests began last week, it has become more and more obvious that the movement is being coordinated and financed, at least in part, by big-money right-wing interests, including some of the same forces that sparked the Tea Party in 2009."

  • From The Washington Post: "The anti-quarantine protests seem spontaneous. But behind the scenes, a powerful network is helping."

Did you attend your state's protest, write a letter to your mayor, or sign the "Re-Open America for Business Petition" because a right-wing cabal told you to? Are you so easily tricked by slick marketing that you would take meaningful action to open your state against your better judgement? Are the American grassroots nothing more than pawns in the hands of wealthy businessmen?

Yeah, we don't think so, either.

Americans are protesting because they're losing their livelihoods. They're protesting because they aren't getting the cancer treatment they need. They're protesting because they understand the danger of allowing an governor or mayor to impose unreasonable policies without any accountability.
